2. Opening Club Run, Chingford Park, Saturday 31 March, 1.45 pm.

Leith Harriers welcomed old and new members to its opening club run from its Chingford Park Clubrooms on Saturday afternoon.
A sudden shower at the start did not dampen the atmosphere as the packs headed out. The fast pack led by Alan Funnell tackled the tough Organ Pipes course ascending via Bethune's Gully and finishing down North Road. The medium pack led by Marc Boulle tackled the Signal Hill route going up North Road, descending via Opoho Road and finishing with a sustained effort from the Gardens up North Road to Chingford Park.
The slow pack headed out for a run around the Gardens area before heading back up Opoho Road for a steep descent back home.
The walking pack found some new tracks around the back of Chingford Park, before visiting the Chingford Park subdivisions.

The club also bade farewell to two stalwarts of the club, Ed and Carol Stevens, who are moving to Wanaka to manage a B&B Lodge. Ed has been a member of the club for almost two decades and during that time he held many positions including that of President. He was also the main organizer for the mountain running series for many years, particularly the Three Peaks Mountain Race and the Otago Mountain Running Series. Carol also became active in helping in the organization of these races and she also served in the very busy job of club secretary. Ed and Carol will still remain as members of the club as Ed wishes to continue his representation for Leith Harriers in the National Road Relay Championships later this year in the Leith Masters Mens 50+ Team. He has represented Leith countless times in the Masters 40+ and Masters 50+ relay teams over the years and always brings his best running to the fore when he competes in these events. We wish Ed and Carol the best of luck in their new venture.

4. Club Run, Chingford Park, Saturday 7 April, 1.45pm

Due to many being away from Dunedin on the Easter Weekend, there was a small turnout at the club run on Saturday. The walkers were nowhere to be seen except for Barry Nichols who paid a courtesy visit.

The weather was ideal for running with the humidity from the last weekend a distant memory. The fast pack led by Andrew Lonie which included Alan Funnell and Mark O'Donnell, headed up to the Organ Pipes to return via North Road, while the medium slow pack headed to Ross Creek where it splintered into four groups. Stephen Skilling resumed his usual solo running effort to take a route up Malvern Street, Marc Boulle and Christine Leith took a more gentle run around the reservoir, Peter Hughes, Grant McDougall and Ron McLay-Barnes running at a slightly faster pace went further up into Ross Creek, while Jim Flynn and Vicki Williams had turned to go back to the club at Woodhaugh Gardens.

On returning to the club, we found that Vicki had managed to lock herself into the wrong shower room. After a bit of a battle, Alan Funnell used his locksmith skills to set her free. Afterwards, the scene was set for a quiet chat in the lounge area while gouging on tea, coffee, cake and biscuits.

5. Club Run, Chingford Park, Saturday 14 April, 1.45pm

Grant McDougall took a large medium pack up Signal Hill via Logan Park while Clare Pascoe took the slow pack for a circuit of Ross Creek.

The walkers drove on down to Woodhaugh Gardens and from there enjoyed a walk around Ross Creek.

6. Club Run, Chingford Park, Saturday 21 April, 1.45pm

It was a good day weatherwise for running with no rain, and no real chill in the air. With many intending to run the Three Peaks on the Sunday, the packs were affected accordingly with some doing short easy runs. The small fast pack led by Marc Boulle, which included Mark O'Donnell and Ray Knox headed up to the Organ Pipes via Bethune's Gully and then finished with a flourish down North Road with leader Marc being left behind by the younger runners.

The medium fast pack which included Rod McCall, Kirsty Morris, Meredith Molloy, Brian Pascoe and Alistair MacAlevey headed out to the Garden's area, then to Queen's Drive, past Moana Pool and then back down to George Street before heading back to Chingford Park.

The slow pack led by Rachel Sloan and which included Clare Pascoe, Christine Leith, Peter Nees, Muzza (Murray McCloy), Russell Hight and Tim Baine (who incidentally got lost somewhere along the way) went up Signal Hill via Norwood Street to return via Calder Avenue.

The walkers decided to traverse the top of the Garden's area and explored a way of finding their way back down Evans Road, but to no avail having to settle for an alternative route.

8. Club Run, Brockville Community Church Hall, Brockville, Saturday 26 May, 1.45pm

Leith club members were hosted by the recreational walkers at the Brockville Community Church Hall on Saturday afternoon. There was a very good turnout despite the fact that the Barnes Cross Country was on the next day. The fast/medium pack all started out together heading up towards the Bull Ring via the farm tracks. Some opted to run for only about 40 minutes so the large pack got progressively depleted as each group turned back as various points along the way.

The weather was ideal for running so in a way it was a pity there was a race on the next day.

The slow pack had a good run and the walking group headed down Brockville Road for a circuitious walk up Fraser's Gully back to the church hall.

9. Club Run, Chingford Park, Saturday 2 June, 1.45pm

There was a really small turnout for the club run on the Queen's Birthday weekend with most members away from Dunedin on holiday. The weather conditions were damp and rainy but this did not deter the fast pack consisting of Andrew Lonie, Alan Funnell and Neale McLanachan from heading up North Road, down to Sawyer's Bay and then up Graham's Bush to finish with at a fast canter down North Road again. Andrew Lonie said that this run was done at almost half marathon race pace.

The less-fast pack headed out to the Garden's area for a run in those environs, while Elliot Nicholls and Marc Boulle opted for a Chingford Park, Quarry Gardens 45 minute tempo run hitting some mean hills in the process.

11. Combined club run with Taieri and Civil Service, Chingford Park, Saturday 16 June, 1.45pm

Cold, cloudy but windless conditions greeted the prospective runners and walkers at Chingford Park this afternoon. The Taieri and Civil Service contingent turned up in their droves which made for some sizeable packs heading out on the various runs. The small fast pack led by Andrew Lonie and including Neale McLanachan and Glen Ferguson headed out in a fast canter to the top of Mount Cargill for a run back to the club via Pine Hill and the steep steps down to North Road.

The large medium pack followed up from Bethunes Gully with half the pack carrying on to the Organ Pipes track to finish down North Road, while the other half returned back down the track to Bethunes Gully and thence back to the club. This section had splintered into many smaller groups running at their preferred pace. Peter Morris was heard to comment that some of the countryside resembled the English moors where he grew up.

The slow pack headed down North Road for a run through Ross Creek while the walkers mostly took an easy stroll up to Bethunes Gully to the loop track before returning in a leisurely way back to the club. The Civil Service club thanked Leith for the invite and returned the invitation for next year. All in all, a very satisfying workout for all concerned.

12. Combined club run with Hill City Harrier & Athletic Club, Chingford Park, Saturday 30 June, 1.45pm

Hill City turned out in force to enjoy some sublime running weather conditions from Leith's Chingford Park club rooms on Saturday. Leith's big guns were competing at the Kennett Cup South Island Cross-country Championships in Christchurch.

Leith treated the Hill City and Leith medium and medium slow and slow packs to a tough run up the Mount Cargill track via Bethune's Gully. Ron McLay-Barnes was the acknowledged leader of the medium pack but the leader of the medium slow and slow packs got lost in the translation. Anyhow, a large pack of runners strung itself out along the track to Mount Cargill and the Organ Pipes. The youngsters kept up a steady pace to the turnoff with the more experienced runners like Alex McEwen, Mark O'Donnell, Brian Pascoe, Julian O'Hagan, Stu Hodges, Marc Boullé, Richard Barker, Caden Shields and co, showing the youngsters how to negotiate the tough hill run. At the turnoff, Ron McLay-Barnes took a group which included Romana Salis, Mark O'Donnell, Stu Hodges, Julian O'Hagan to the Organ Pipes for a run down North Road back to the club.

Caden Shields, Richard Barker, Marc Boulle and the younger runners and some of the slower runners headed back down to Bethune's Gully to the club. On the way down Noel Matthews and Rachel and Wayne van Gorp were passed still heading up to the Mount Cargill parking area and view site. They were to return later back down the track to the club via Bethune's Gully.

The fast pack which included pack leader Kirsty Morris, Elliot O'Sullivan, Alex Gorrie, John Bayne and Andrew Moore had earlier headed up North Road to the Sawyer's Bay turnoff for the run down to the bay, then up to the Graham's Bush track to meet up with the remnants of the medium pack for a fast run down North Road back to the club. Alex Gorrie and John Bayne set a mean pace. Bayne was ambitious enough to head up to the Organ Pipes for a solo run down to the club via Bethune's Gully. We were all finishing off the goodies on the table when he came trudging across the wet muddy Chingford Park soccer fields.

The walkers headed up North Road to the Signal Hill Track for a look at the harbour views and then headed on back down the hill at a brisk pace. Afterwards everyone enjoyed the after run and walk eats and drinks. Leith would like to thank Hill City for sharing the runs and walks with the club.

Leith runners in this pack included Peter Morris, Steve Smith, Steve Skilling and Andrew Perry.
Malcolm Giles led the medium slow pack through Caversham to Kaikorai Valley while John Stinson took the slow pack to Kaikorai Valley via Lookout.
