A solid number of Leith athletes turned
out for the official opening track and field meeting
of the 2009/10 summer season.
Neale McLanachan and Jason Palmer got
things going for Leith with good efforts in the Men's
20-34 1500m race with McLanachan finishing second
in the SMs grade and Palmer third.
The Leith girls ran well too with Kirsty
Morris finishing second in the SW grade. Megan Balchin
and Rebecca Keat diced it out for third and fourth
place in the SW grade with just over a second separating
them. Sue Cuthbert (running in the MW35 grade) finished
with the same time as Balchin in a thrilling photo
finish.
Richard Hendry showed that he is going
to be a threat in the MM grade this season with a
fine win in the MM grade 1500m.
Neale McLanachan, Glen Ferguson and
Jason Palmer dominated the 5000m with McLanachan winning
the race overall as well as finishing first in the
SM grade. Ferguson finished second overall and first
in the MM grade while Palmer finished third overall
and second in the SM grade.
Bill Kenny returned to competitive running
in Otago with a run in the 400m.
There was a large turnout of Leith runners
for the 3000m and 800m races at the Caledonian on
Saturday afternoon.
Neale McLanachan finished second and
fourth overall in the Senior Men's grade 3000m run.
Alan Funnell won the master men's 35 grade finishing
8th overall with Ray Knox not far behind as 3rd master
man 35 and 10th overall.
In the separate 3000m master men's 35
race, Mark O'Donnell overcame a recent injury to finish
second. Lachie Ashton made a rare appearance on the
track to finish seventh. Jim
Flynn set a new Otago record on the track for the
Men's 75-79 age grade 3000m race. The Otago
standard was 17 minutes for the 3000m distance on
the track and he cracked it by 54 seconds to set the
record at 16 minutes 6 seconds.. Bill Kenny assisted
by keeping pace with his fellow veteran track runner
over the 12 and a half lap race.
Rebecca Keat was another to shine winning
the senior women's race in a smart time of 10 minutes
49.4 seconds.
Marc Boulle won the Men's 50+ 800m race
to complete a fine day in the sun for Leith at the
Caledonian track.

5. Track & Field Meeting, Caledonian, Saturday
31 October
Jim Flynn set another record of 7min 20.35sec in
the master men's 75-79 grade for the 1500m track
race at the Caledonian on Saturday afternoon.
Glen Ferguson showed that he is ready to attack
the 10,000m Otago Master Men's 45-49 track record
of 33min 58sec next Saturday with a great win in
the Men's 5000m race. Running conservatively at
first, he took the lead over the final laps to win
in convincing fashion ending with a time of 15min
43sec. Andrew Lonie (16:27.39) featured prominently
in the first half of the race taking the lead at
one stage to finish as second master man, while
Alan Funnell (17:07.86) set a steady pace throughout
to emerge as third place finisher in this grade.
Jason Palmer showed a turn of speed to win his B
grade 1500m race in a time of 4min 27.52sec, while
senior women's runner Kirsty Morris (4:49.47) and
master women's runner Sue Cuthbert (5:03.05) won
their respective grades.
Lachie Ashton tackled the 1500m, 400m (twice) and
the 200m in a solid display of interval training,
while Bill Kenny accompanied Jim Flynn over the
1500m distance and also ran the 400m.
Rebecca Keat (5:01.7) and Megan Balchin (5:04.8)
dominated the senior women's grade in their 1500
race to show that the winter harrier season has
provided them with a solid platform with which to
tackle the summer track and field season. Expect
some fireworks from these two this season.

6. Track & Field Meeting, Caledonian, Saturday
7 November, Combined Events Champs Day one
Glen Ferguson started the ball rolling for Leith's
attack on some Otago age group records and standards
in the 10,000m. He had to contend with a small field
and a strong wind on the back straight over the
25 lap course. Andrew Lonie stuck with him for a
the first half of the race helping him to nullify
the effects of the strong wind, but after 15 minutes
Ferguson was left to battle the elements on his
own. He did so in fine fashion keeping a steady
pace even on the back straight to eventually win
the race and break Ariki's Allan Davis's 20 yr old
MM45-49 Otago record (1989) of 33 minutes 58 seconds
by setting a new record of 33 minutes 29.77 seconds.
Jim Flynn was also pursuing the MM75-79 Otago standard
of 60 minutes for the 10,000m. He had to battle
around the track 25 times virtually on his own,
but he stuck to his task and conquered the windy
conditions to finish with a flourish setting a record
of 59 minutes 35.43 seconds.
Sue Cuthbert broke her own 3000m record in the
women's aged 40 to 44 grade with a time of 10min
55.06sec in winning the master women's grade..
Other highlights for Leith were Kirsty Morris's
being first senior women to finish in the 3000m
run with Rebecca Keat showing continued improvement
in finishing 2nd in this grade.

Jim Flynn for the fourth consecutive week set a
new Otago record on the track. This time he set
a new record for the 5000m track of 27min 30.53sec
at the Caledonian on Saturday, which was well inside
the NZAVA standard of 28 minutes. Glen Ferguson

the MM35+ grade in 16min 19.98sec.
Jason Palmer ran a personal best of 4min 24.47sec
for the 1500m in finishing as first senior man and
fourth overall in the men's 1500. He also ran a

8. Track & Field Meeting, Caledonian, Saturday
21 November
For the fifth successive Saturday in a row Jim
Flynn set a new record. This time he set a record
of 3 minutes 35.78 seconds off the NZAVA standard
of 3 minutes 50 seconds in the track 800m distance
race. Bill Kenny (grade MM70-74) ran well to keep
ahead of Flynn and finished with a time of 3:30.97.
Steve Skilling made a return to the track finishing
third in the first MM35+ 800m race in , outlasting
the fast finishing Marc Boulle.
In the 3000m, Neale McLanachan finished third overall
and was first in the senior men's grade. Jason Palmer
was fourth overall and second senior man. Ray Knox
won the MM35+ grade while Mark O'Donnell was second.
On the field new Leith man, David Barton won the
Men's 35+ Shot Put and Javelin. Not a bad result
for someone who has just made a return to competitive
track and field. It is good to see somone flying
the Leith flag in the field and the sprints.

Sue Cuthbert won a gold medal in the Master Women's
40-44 grade at the NZ Marathon Championships held
in conjunction with the Southland Marathon in Invercargill
on Sunday. She narrowly missed breaking the three
hour barrier by just 13 seconds but was happy to
bring home gold for Leith.
John Bayne had a great run finishing with a silver
medal in the MM45-49 grade. His time of 2 hours
43.53 minutes was a personal best. His focus on
judicious recovery during a tough training and racing
schedule over the winter season helped provide him
with the means to show his ability over this distance.
Richard Hendry missed a bronze medal in this grade
by one position but he still performed well to again
easily crack the 3 hour barrier in finishing in
2 hours 56.27 seconds.
Another to feature in the medals in the marathon
was Jim Kerse, who won a bronze medal in the MM60-64
grade. He finished the marathon in 4 hours 30.48
seconds apparently with the "Wabash Cannonball"
ringing in his ears.
Leith athletes also featured prominently in the
non-championship half-marathon and 10km runs. Andrew
Lonie won the Master Men's Half-Marathon grade in
a personal best of 1 hour 14.2 seconds (he was 5th
overall). Megan Balchin also achieved a personal
best in the half-marathon finishing fourth in the
senior women's race in 1 hour 26.09 seconds (she
was 16th overall). David Rush finished second in
the 10km race in a time of 35 minutes 54 seconds.

In the Men 35+ grade, Barton won the Discus, finished
second in the Hammer Throw and the long jump and
fourth in the 100m, while Johnston won the Men 35+
grade Hammer Throw and finished second in the Discus
Throw.
Neale McLanachan competed in the Men's A grade
1500m race finishing third Senior Man (5th overall).
Alan Funnell won the MM35+ grade in the 1500m with
a time of 4 minutes 36.94 seconds. Kirsty Morris
returned to form with a fine run finishing first
in the Senior Women's 1500m in a time of 4 minutes
45.83 seconds. Marc Boulle claimed fourth place
in the separate MM35+ 1500m race.
In the 5000m Leith had a number of athletes competing.
Neale McLanachan had a solid run to finish third
in 16 minutes 5.77 seconds and 2nd in the Senior
Men's grade. Alan Funnell (1st MM35), Ray Knox (2nd
MM35) and Mark O'Donnell (3rd MM35) all had good
runs.
Bill Kenny tackled the 400m finishing in 80.5 seconds.

12. Track & Field Meeting, Caledonian, Saturday
12 December 2009
Leith highlight at the Athletics Otago Track and
Field Meeting Leith was the second 1500m largely
contested by MM35, SW and MW35 grades. Steve Skilling
initially took the lead but Richard Hendry (4:47.5)
soon surged to the front never to be overhauled
again as he strode comfortably to the finish. Skilling
(4:54.6) finished comfortably in second position
ensuring a Leith domination of this race. Megan
Balchin (5:4.94) won the senior women's grade. Sue
Cuthbert won the MW35 grade.
Alan Funnell (4:39.23) was the best Leith MM35
1500m runner having run in the Men's A grade race.
Neale McLanachan (4:22.59) was the first Leith runner
to finish the Men's A grade 1500m while Jason Palmer
(4:27.91) kept up his good form by being the second
Leith runner to finish.
David Barton won the MM35 grade discus, hammer
throw, 100m, and 200m. The evergreen Jim Flynn showed
his versatility by running the 200m and 400m.
Thanks to Bill Kenny, Ray Knox (and kids), Steve
Skilling, Marc Boulle, Jason Palmer, Margaret Knox
and Megan Balchin who assisted in Leith duty club
tasks during the meeting.

14. Track & Field Meeting, Caledonian, Saturday
19 December 2009 - included the Otago 10,000m Championships
Alan Funnell won the master men's Otago 10,000m
track title on Saturday at the Caledonian. He chose
to set his own pace despite the strong head wind
in the home straight and powered away from his opposition
to record a strong 36min 7.94sec win. Ray Knox (37min
30.3sec) broke away from Richard Hendry (37min 37.88sec)
and never relinquished the significant gap. A gap
that Hendry, despite trying hard, could just not
close due to the strong headwind. Knox finished
second and Hendry third. John Bayne featured early
on, but faded to fourth place.
Contesting the Otago senior men's title, Neale
McLanachan (35min 30.86sec) was in the lead bunch
for the first third of the race, but once Chris
Tipper (Ariki) made the break, McLanachan was unable
to maintain his position and drifted back to finish
third in 35min 30.86sec. With the strong headwind
playing a huge part, once he had lost contact with
the leading two runners (Tipper and eventual winner
Nathin Baxter) it was always going to be a hard
task to get back into title contention. A brave
effort nonetheless by a runner who never gives up.
In the end he was not far behind putting in a strong
effort to keep Tipper honest and finishing third
overall. With four laps to go, Tipper had lost his
lead and was running on his own for second place.
Megan Balchin contested the Otago senior women's
title and finished strongly in second place in a
time of 39min 16.26sec.
Paul Johnston competed in the field for Leith,
finishing second in the javelin throw and shot put
in the MM35 grade.
Jason Palmer won the senior men's 3000m race in
9min 43.51sec as well as finishing second in his
first 800m race in a time of 2min 12.82sec (PB)

15. Track & Field Meeting, Caledonian, Saturday
16 January 2010 - included the Scottish Shop Caledonian
Handicap Mile
Bill Kenny won the Scottish Shop Caledonian Handicap
Mile held at the Caledonian track on Saturday. He
was the first runner to start and he made the most
of it by never relinquishing his lead and improving
on his recent form by running the distance in 7mins
5.83secs (an improvement of over 20seconds for the
mile on the time calculated from his 1500m time).
This was his first win in the event and it was fitting
that it was a Scotsman who won it. It was a close
affair with the rest of the runners and the second
Leith runner to finish was Mark O'Donnell (7th)
and then Richard Hendry (9th) just 5 seconds behind
him. Fastest Leith runner was Hendry (5:15.29) with
Kirsty Morris (5:17.47) second fastest.
Earlier, Morris had won the SW 1500m in 4min 53.60
and David Rush had won the M35 1500m in 4min 44.66sec.
David Barton (29.61sec) and Hendry (31.07sec) contested
the 200m.
Andrew Lonie won the M35 5000m in 16min 55.18sec
with Ray Knox finishing second in 18min 4.69sec.
David Barton and Paul Johnston flew the Leith flag
in the field. Barton won the M35 Discus (27.09m)
and the Hammer Throw (21.03m) with Johnston finishing
second in both events.

16. Track & Field Meeting, Caledonian,
Saturday 23 January 2010 - included the Scottish
Shop Caledonian Handicap Mile
Kirsty Morris kept Hill City's Shireen Crumpton
within her sights throughout the 5000m Otago Senior
Women's Championship race held at the Caledonian
on Saturday. At one stage she looked like she was
making significant ground on the Hill City runner,
but Crumpton (17:40.43) dug deep to hold out a never-say-die
Morris (17:47.63) by just 7 seconds. Megan Balchin
finished third. Neale McLanachan finished fifth
in the senior men's grade.
The masters' grades Otago 5000m Champs was held
separately this year. Alan Funnell fought a terrific
duel with Kevin Duggan (Hill City) for most of the
race, eventually pulling away to convincingly win
the master men's title in 17min 8.16secs with Duggan
about 8 seconds back. Richard Hendry (17:34.34)
held out Ray Knox (17:52.20) for third place. Sue
Cuthbert (19:10.98) comfortably won the master women's
title.
In the sprints, David Barton (100m, 13,87sec, 2nd),
(200m, 28.69sec, 3rd) showed steady improvement.

was a significant factor. She took the lead with

in 4min 48.11sec to deny the Ariki runner a chance
of winning. Megan Balchin also had a fine race running
a personal best of 4min 59.16sec. Sue Cuthbert (5min
12.55sec) won the Master Women's 1500m.
