Results
The holiday weekend and inclement weather resulted
in a smaller number than usual of Leith athletes
participating in the track and field meeting at the
Caledonian on Saturday afternoon.
Jon Caseley finished fouth in the Men's 20-34 age
grade 1500m race in 4min 34.28sec.
Andrew Lonie almost achieved a personal best in the
1500m with a time of 4min 18.20sec in finishing
as first master man. He followed this up with a workmanlike
17min 6.27sec in the 5000m, which was run
in atrocious conditions of wind and rain.
In the field Winifred Harding finished second in the
Master Women's 35+ Discus throw with
a 21.08 metres throw and first in the Hammer Throw
3.00kg with a throw of 31.35 metres.
Thanks to club President Peter Hughes and the Leith
members who helped in the long jump
event during the meeting.

Leith did not have many runners taking part in the Hurring Relays,
but the teams still still put in a good effort with team of McLanachan,
Winsbury, and Ferguson claiming 8 points in the 3000m race.
The 4 x 800m race with Leith team made up of Neale
McLanachan, Glen Ferguson, Andrew Lonie and John Winsbury
acquiting themselves well despite being more accustomed to
the longer distances.
This team finished fourth gaining 8 points for the club.
The final tally was 16 points with no points coming from the
sprint and field events with the club finishing in 5th position.

Sunshine with a strong tail wind - 1/11/2008

Once again Dunedin weather was at its fiery best.
Gale force gusts from the South West
ensured some extremely tough running conditions for the runners.
Kirsty Morris was
blown off the track in one of her races, the wind was that strong.
Kirsty Morris did well in the 3000m toughing it out to win the
Women's grade in the mixed Men and Women's race.
Mark O'Donnell fought it out with Anthony Trainor of Ariki to win
the race overall and also the Master Men's 35 grade.
In the Open Grade 3000m race,John Winsbury was content to sit
behind the leaders letting them do the hard work into the strong wind
in the back straight.
Neale McLanachan had initially taken the lead to force the pace but
faded slightly later in the race.
John Winsbury who is heavily into training for
the Ultra Distance Kepler Challenge (67km) in mid-December,had the
strength to take the lead with just over 400m to go to finish a strong first.
McLanachan came back strongly at the leaders to finish fourth.
Kirsty Morris also ran the Women's 800m which she dominated winning
this race in convincing fashion.
Thanks must go to Greg Johnston and Grant McDougall for helping with
the club duties in the triple jump pit.

Leith athletes turned out in force for the track and field meeting at the
Caledonian on Saturday.
Kirsty Morris won the feature event, the Ness Cup Handicap Mile, after a
titanic battle with Matthew Bixley of Hill City. Only point seven of a
second separated the two runners.
In the 5000m, Megan Balchin (19:40.70) finished second in the women's grade,
John Winsbury (15:41.60) took out the men's 20-34 grade, Glen Ferguson (16:16.10)
won the men's 35 grade.
It was great day for Winifred Harding who won five Weight Pentathlon events
which included a win in the women's 30+ Weight Pentathlon with 2823 points and
the W30+ Hammer Throw Weight Pentathlon with 705 points.
In the main 1500m, Andrew Lonie (4:15.1) achieved a personal best in winning
the men's grade.
Mark O'Donnell (4:44.10) won the men's 35 grade in the mixed 1500m,
while Jason Palmer (4:48.70) won the men's 20-34 grade.

There were some good performances from Leith athletes at the track and
field meeting at the Caledonian on Saturday with ideal conditions of
sunny skies and a light tailwind.
Andrew Lonie won the men's 35 grade in the main 3000m race in a
fast 9min 16.81sec, with David Rush third in 9min 48.81sec.
Richard Hendry won the Men's 35+ 3000m race in 10min 13.66sec.
Sue Cuthbert (11:11.87) won the women's 35 grade in the 3000m.
Winifred Harding continued her good form in field events with a
first place in the women's 35 Shot Put (3kg) with a throw of 9.61 metres
and a second place in the women's 35 Javelin Throw (500g) throwing 13.43 metres.
Kirsty Morris decided to concentrate on the shorter distances running
a swift 2min 20.58sec in the women's 800m for a second place finish.

Champs)
Leith performed well in the Otago 3000m Championships on
the weekend. Glen Ferguson won the
Master Men's 35+ title in 9min 11.84sec. Mark O'Donnell
(9:52.81) was second in this grade.
Sue Cuthbert (10:54.94) ran well to take out the Master
Women's 35+ title.
Neale McLanachan (9:15.75 4th SM) was Leith's first
senior man home. Kirsty Morris (10:01.38)
narrowly missed breaking 10 minutes in finishing second
in the Women's grade. Megan Balchin (10:55.65)
finished third.
In the field Winifred Harding threw 33.96m to win
the Hammer Throw (3kg).

Leith athletes competed in the South Island Masters championships.
There were no Leith athletes competing in the Seniors Meeting.
11. South Island Masters Championships, 28/29/30
November 2008, Mosgiel
Leith athletes were in gold medal winning form on the
weekend.

Masters Champs 2008 results
Glen Ferguson won the Men's 40-44 grade 800m in 2min
11.9sec to show that he has plenty of speed
as well as endurance in events ranging from marathons
to middle distance. A truely versatile athlete.
Ferguson also added the Men.s 40-44 grade 3000m title
to his achievements in this championships
with a quality 9min 32.7. He also won the Men's 40-44
grade 5000m title in 16min 59sec.
Bill Kenny won the Men's 70-74 grade 800m in 3min 17.7
proving that a long injury layoff does
not stop him from putting in quality performances
as soon as he steps on the track again.
Kenny also won the Men's 70-74 grade 3000m gold medal
in 14min 41sec.
David Rush was also in gold medal winning mood to take
out the Men's 40-44 grade 1500m in 4min 36.7sec.
In the field, Winifred Harding once again brought home
the gold medals. She finished first in the
Women's 50-54 grade Shotput throwing 9.67m. She also
won the Women's 50-54 grade Discus
with a throw of 22.98m. Finally she added the Women's
50-54 grade Hammer Throw with a 32.08m effort,
as well as a win in the Women's 50-54 grade weight
throw with a 12.26m throw.
Harding completed the weekend's work with a winning
2885 points score in the Weight Penthlon W50-54 grade.

12. Athletics Otago Track and Field Meeting 6
December 2008, Caledonian
Leith athletes once again put in some excellent performances on
Saturday at the Caledonian weekly track and field meeting.
Kirsty Morris smashed through the 10 minute barrier in the 3000m race
finishing with a personal best time of 9minutes 52.24 seconds to win
the women's grade. Morris also finished off with a quick 2min 27.26
in the 800m to win the women's grade there too.
David Rush won the Master Men's grade in the 3000m in 9min 38.86sec.
In the same race, Richard Hendry ran one of his best races this season
finishing third in this grade in 9min 48.70sec.
Sue Cuthbert finished second in the Masters Women's grade in the 3000m in 11min 59sec.
Bill Kenny making a comeback to racing after being out for over a year with injury
ran 3min 21.42sec in the 800m event.

13. Athletics Otago Track and Field Meeting 13 December
2008, Caledonian
Richard Hendry ran another excellent race in the
5000m and despite having no competition for most
of the race, posted a time of 16 minutes 59.05 seconds
to win the race by a very large margin, lapping
all but two runners in the process. John Bayne finished
third overall (second MM35) in this race
in 17 minutes 49.37 seconds. Sue Cuthbert won the
Women's 35 grade in 19 minutes 11.83 seconds.
The mile was a more close run affair with Andrew
Lonie leading the Leith charge and finishing second
overall and first MM35 in 4 minutes 41.86 seconds.
Neale McLanachan showed a glimpse of his old form
with a well crafted 4 minutes 48.99 second effort
placing him third overall and second in the
Senior Men's grade. Mark O'Donnell shrugged off a
recent niggling injury by finishing third
in the MM35 in 5 minutes 1.89 seconds. Kirsty Morris
won the Women's 20-34 grade
in 5 minutes 3.69 seconds. In the process Morris,
took 7sec off her best mile time to post a
track record. Megan Balchin ran in the second Mile
race (Event 162) winning the Women's 20-34 grade
for that race in 5 minutes 39.01 seconds.
A few Leith athletes tried their hands in the 400m
sprint races. Neale Mclanachan was the pick of the
bunch here with a second place in the main 400m race
(Event 405) in 58.63 seconds.
Mark O'Donnell finished in 61.90 seconds to win the
MM35 grade in this race while Kirsty Morris
won the Women's 20-34 grade in 65.44. In the (Event
406) 400m race Bill Kenny finished in 1:22.95 to
show that he still has that speed in his legs.

Note: Confirmation is still being awaited from Athletics Otago on the Senior Men's
and Senior Women's and finishing positions, because the results do not reflect whether
some of the runners entered as SM or M19 and SW or MW35. This report will be updated
once this confirmation has been received.
On Saturday Leith athletes dominated the Master Men's grade in the Otago 10,000m
Championships. Glen Ferguson won the MM35 title finishing third overall in 32 minutes
52.98 seconds, even leading for a couple of laps during the middle stage of the race.
Second Leith athlete home in this grade was Andrew Lonie (33:21.18, 3rd MM35) with
Richard Hendry (34:44.77, 4th MM35).
Kirsty Morris, having earlier run her best 1500m (4:39.87 Pb), finished second woman
overall in 38 minutes 47 second to cap off a good day's effort.
Megan Balchin (40:22.58) finished third woman overall.
Neale McLanachan (33:33.11) and Jason Palmer (34:01.27) also gave Leith lots to cheer
about.
In the Men's 1500m, David Rush (4:32.36) won the MM35 grade.
Leith was once again represented well in the field events by Winifred Harding,
who won both the MW35 Discus Throw (22.05m) and the Women's 17+ Hammer Throw 3kg
with a throw of 33.21 metres.

Memorial Park (Caledonian Society Mile)
Masters runner Richard Hendry (Leith) won the Scottish Shop Caledonian Society handicap
mile at Memorial Park Mosgiel on Saturday overhauling Bill Kenny (Leith)who had started
off go. Hendry started off a handicap that was 2min 05sec behind Kenny.
Hendry won by 50m on the rain-soaked grass track from Peter Hughes (Caversham) with
Alex McEwan (Hill City) coming up fast to fill third spot. Hendry's time on the rain
soaked grass track was 5 minutes 4 seconds which was the third fastest time.
Senior runner James List of Ariki posted the fastest time of 4 minutes 35 seconds.
Earlier on, in the 5000m race, Paul Beauvais who is back in Dunedin after a long spell
in Melbourne and now running for Leith again, showed he is ready to challenge
the Master 40+ athletes in Otago by finishing second just 16 seconds behind the
winner young Chris Tipper of Ariki who finished in 17 minutes 13 seconds.
John Bayne (Leith) making a comeback to the track after tackling many ultra runs
over the last few years achieved a personal best improvement of 7 seconds by
running 17 minutes 42 seconds on the sodden grass surface.
Not to be outdone by the youngsters on the track, Winifred Harding (Leith) got her
throwing season off to a great start by winning the Women's 50+ Hammer event with a
throw of 32.67m (3kg).

16. Athletics Otago Track and Field Meeting, 24 January

Grass Track, Hand Times, Sunny with Head wind
It was good to see a good turnout by Leith for the track and field meeting held
at Memorial Park, Mosgiel in very hot sunny conditions.
Glen Ferguson got Leith off to a good start with an excellent second place in the
3000m race. He showed that he is Leith's top runner at the moment in both Open
and Master Men's grades by finishing also top Master Man 35+ in this race
in a very good time of 9 minutes 24.4 seconds considering the grass track
and hot conditions with a stiff breeze to boot.
Neale McLanachan, who is still on the comeback trail after a long layoff from
competition, ran well in the conditions to finish as second Senior Man
in 9 minutes 56.5 seconds.
Another Leith runner to shine on the day was Richard Hendry, who despite
complaining about the short time to warm up due to a rescheduled start time
in the 800 metres, still ran well to finish third overall and second
Master Man 35+ in 2 minutes 21.9 seconds. Sue Cuthbert also put in a
sterling effort in the 800 metres to finish as first Master Woman 35+
in a time of 2 minutes 39.5 seconds.
Paul Beauvais looks like he is getting a bit fitter after his sojourn in
Melbourne by finishing second in the 3000m race in the MM35+ grade. It looks
like he is finding Dunedin's hilly tracks to his liking as far as the training
goes.

There was a very good turnout of Leith athletes across a range of events.
Glen Ferguson once again put in a great effort in the 1500m race, finishing first
in the Master Men's 35 grade in a time of 4 minutes 19.5 seconds. David Rush
showed that he is running into some serious form finishing second in this grade
in 4 minutes 29.7 seconds. John Bayne arrived a little late for the first race
but he ran well to win the race 3 1500m in 4 minutes 52.9 seconds.
In the 5000m, Kirsty Morris won the women's grade in 18 minutes 14.8 seconds.
John Bayne ran this race too, winning the Master Men's 35 grade in 17 minutes
59.4 seconds.
The evergreen Bill Kenny tackled both the 1500m and the 400m finishing with times of
6 minutes 43 seconds and 1 minute 23.8 seconds respectively. Marc Boulle making a
comeback after injury ran the 400m in 68.70 seconds to finish second in the
Master Men's 35 grade.
Winifred Harding was taking part in the the Otago Masters Weight Pentathlon
Championships and came away with a number of wins. She won the Women's 30+
Shot Put, the Women's 30+ Hammer Throw, Women's 30+ Weight Throw finishing with
2730 points to win the W30+ Weight Pentathlon Otago Champs. Well done, Winifred!

Grass Track, Hand Times, Sunny , light variable breeze
Another good turnout of Leith athletes for the weekly track and field meeting saw
good performances being produced. Paul Beauvais started proceedings with a win
in the first 3000m race. Running solo he ran a time of 9 minutes 52.9 seconds
for the distance. In the second 3000m race, Neale McLanachan finished second in the
Senior Men's grade 20-34 in 9 minutes 39.2 seconds. John Bayne achieved a personal
best of 10 minutes 7.5 seconds in finishing 4th in the MM35+ grade, with David Rush
returning to form, winning the MM35+ grade in 9 minutes 45.6 seconds. Kirsty Morris
won the Senior Women's grade in this race.
The 800m saw Richard Hendry winning the MM35+ grade in a time of 2:16.50. Sue
Cuthbert won the women's 35+ grade in 2:32.40, while Neale McLanachan won the
Senior Men's grade in 2:13.80.

Glen Ferguson continued his amazing form with a blistering run in the
50000m race. He finished third overall and first Master Man in
15 minutes 42 seconds. Paul Beauvais second in the MM35 grade
in 17 minutes 4.31 seconds to continue his steady improvement
since returning from Melbourne. He is sure to provide a boost
to our Master Men's teams during the Harrier season.
John Bayne and Alan Funnell were not far behind Beauvais in this race.
Kirsty Morris (17min 44sec) won the Senior Women's grade in this race.
Neale McLanachan also continued his steady return to form with a
solid 16 minute 22.76 effort finishing 3rd in the Senior Men's grade.
The 1500m races also had some Leith entrants. Neale McLanachan ran a
very good 4 minutes 19.18 to win the Senior Men's grade. David Rush
also put in a great effort in running 4 minutes 25.19 seconds.
Sue Cuthbert narrowly missed breaking the 5 minute barrier to win
the MW35 grade in 5 minutes 0.29 seconds.
Bill Kenny tried his hand in both the 1500m and the 400m, dipping under
80 seconds for the one lapper.

Leith competed in the Otago Track and Field Championships on Sunday.
Sue Cuthbert (2min 33.34sec) won the Master Women's 40-44 age grade 800m race.
Richard Hendry (2min 15.47sec) stuck with the fast guys in a thrilling race to
finish a narrow third in the Master Men's race winning the MM 40-44 grade.
Bill Kenny won the Master Men's 70-74 grade.
Sue Cuthbert won the Women's 40-44 grade and Richard Hendry won the
Men's 40-44 grade, Bill Kenny won the Men's 70-74 grade in the 200m race.
Glen Ferguson (4min 18.57sec) was the star performer for Leith again the
Senior Men's 1500m where he along with Andrew Lonie (4min 25.55sec) and
David Rush (4min 28.95sec) opted to run in the Senior Men's grade.
Thanks to Peter Hughes, Marc Boulle (semi-official), David Rush and
Winifred Harding (official) who helped in the club duties and officiating
for the day.

Leith Report:
On Day Two of the Otago Athletics Championships held
at the Caledonian on Saturday afternoon, Glen Ferguson
won the Otago Men's 40-44 title in the 1500m race
running an excellent 4 minutes 21.82.
David Rush (4min 27.18sec) finished second in this
grade with Paul Beauvais (4min 38.17sec) making it
the trifecta for Leith in this competitive grade.
Bill Kenny with a stamina of a man half his age tackled
the demanding 2000m steeplechase to finish the race
in an excellent time of 10 minutes 15.11 seconds gaining
the Men 60+ title in the process.

Includes the Otago 5000m Championships
The Otago 5000m Track Champs was well suppported by
Leith athletes. Perfect weather conditions enables
the athletes to turn in some very good performances.
Kirsty Morris ran a magnificent race to outlast the
Hill City athlete Rachel Kingsford putting in a sustained
kick in the last lap to finish second overall and
second in the Senior Women's grade to Shireen Crumpton
of Hill City. Morris's time of 17 minutes 16.89 seconds
was just 10 seconds outside her personal best.
Glen Ferguson won the Men's 35+ title running a typically
fast 15 minutes 50.50 seconds for the 25 lap track
event. Andrew Lonie (16min 14.13sec) finished 2nd
in this grade.
Sue Cuthbert (19min 3.51sec) won the Women's 40-44
grade. Neale McLanachan continued his return to
form by finishing third in the Men's 20-34 grade in
15min 45.46sec.
Bill Kenny decided to stick to the shorter events
running an excellent 36.28 second 200m and a 3min
9.18sec
800m.

Neale McLanachan (4min 18.59sec) ran well to finish
third in the Senior Men's grade. David Rush held out
Paul Beauvais (4min 34.04sec) to win the Master Men's
35 grade. Bill Kenny ran a magnificent 35.4 seconds
for the 200m belying his age. He just does not seem
to slow down much.

Leith report and results:
The final Otago Track and Field Meeting of the season
took place on Sunday morning in cold drizzly conditions
with the 800m and 3000m the events of choice for the
Leith athletes.
In the 3000m, Neale McLanachan showed that he will
have a good base of speed to work with during the
winter harrier's season by recording his fastest 3000m
run of the season finishing second in the Senior Men's
grade in a time of 9 minutes 3 seconds. Paul Beauvais
maintained his steady form in posting a time of 9
minutes 55.7 seconds. Bill Kenny (14min 2sec) had
the dubious distinction of being the last Leith runner
to finish for the season, but finished in fine style.
The 800m saw Marc Boulle (2min 29.12sec) as the only
Leith competitor, and running in the second race he
put in a solid effort to finish fourth in the Master
Men's 35.
