Dunedin's 25th Skyline Challenge

Perfect sunny, windless and cool conditions provided the setting for a wonderful 25th Skyline Challenge in Dunedin today (20 April 2008). Thanks to all the competitors, organisers, sponsors, helpers and spectators who made it such a great day for mountain running.

Tom Hunt at Swampy Summit

Tom "Moose" Hunt, the "tough as teak" young runner from the Hill City Harriers Club in Dunedin, has won Dunedin's 25th Skyline Challenge Three Peaks Mountain Race. Finishing strongly, he completed the tough and hilly 26km course, which traverses Flagstaff, Swampy Summit and Mount Cargill, in 2 hours 4 minutes 51 seconds.

Mike Wakelin at Swampy Summit

Third fastest was Mike Wakelin who was also second in the MM35 grade in 2 hours 6 minutes 36 seconds.
Fourth fastest was Andrew Lonie who finished third in the MM35 grade in a PB of 2 hours 8 minutes.

The second Open Men's competitor across the line was Stewart Paul who finished in 2 hours 12 minutes 42 seconds. Third Open Men's competitor to finish was Dougal Allan who finished in 2 hours 12 minutes 14 seconds.

Sue Cuthbert was the overall women's winner finishing in 2 hours 24 minutes 35 seconds and she also achieved a record-breaking win in the MW35 grade.

Louisa Andrew won the Open Women's grade in 2 hours 40 minutes 58 seconds. Dave McLean won the MM50 grade in 2 hours 30 minutes 56 seconds. Viv Eyers won the MW50 grade in 2 hours 53 minutes 59 seconds.

Teams Placings:

The team of Geoff Williamson and Bevan Stevens broke the Men's team record to finish in 1 hour 59 minutes 48 seconds. Williamson got to the top of Swampy Summit in 59 minutes 21 seconds, while Stevens ran 60 minutes 27 seconds for the second half to achieve the win and the record.

Allison Perry and Sonya Cameron won the Open Women's teams event in 3 hours 20 minutes 30 seconds. Alice Baker and Daniel Peacocke won the Mixed Teams event in 2 hours 40 minutes 58 seconds.

Town Garage King of the Mountain

For the first man to get to the top of Swampy Summit and still finish. This was won by Axel Reiser who got to Swampy in 57 minutes 2 seconds.

Town Garage Queen of the Mountain

For the first woman to get to the top of Swampy Summit and still finish. This was won by Sue Cuthbert who got to Swampy in 68 minutes 7 seconds..

Notable Achievements: John Scoones completed his 23rd Three Peaks, while Ian Bartley completed his 17th.
