REPORT: Dunedin had had its fair share of rain the past week and the Chingford Park soccer fields were well and truly drenched. This combined with an almost non-existent drainage system made for some pretty tough running conditions. Steve Smith, Peter Hughes and Greg Johnston did their best to avoid the really bad sections but marking out a firm 365m course around the two small soccer fields was always going to be a challenge. In the end the runners had some rather soft and muddy sections with which to contend.

SENIOR, MASTERS 35, BOYS 16 AND UNDER MILE: The large field of 16 relished the prospective of battling it out over the wet and giving surface which would ensure that the speedsters advantage would be nullified. As expected Neale McLanachan, Conor Delahunty and Andrew Lonie forged ahead early on to have a battle of their own to be first to break the tape. Conor carried his form for the Masters Games and the summer track season into this race, combined it with his natural ability over this type of course to win narrowly from Neale and also secure the Masters Men's title. Andrew had a good run having seemingly recovered from his great run in the Three Peaks to finish not far behind in third position. Glen Ferguson put in a concerted last lap effort to leave the remaining field behind to finish fourth overall and second in the Masters Men's 35 grade. Neil Gaudin coming back from injury had a good run to finish third in the Masters Mens 35 grade. Steve Munro running a mile for the first time ran well to finish third in the Senior Mens while young 16 year old William Sew Hoy ran intelligently to finish near the top third of a strong field.

MASTER MEN'S 50 MILE: Ed Stevens took the lead from the start and he soon had the field strung out in his wake. He held a good lead for two laps and although for awhile in the third lap it looked like Graham Anderson and Alastair McAlevey might mount a challenge, he put in a burner around the last lap to win comfortably with Alastair catching Graham to finish second by a hairsbreath.

(SENIOR, MASTERS 35, MASTERS 45) WOMEN'S MILE: The field of ten women runners started out conservatively with Kirsty Morris building a big lead. The underfoot conditions were becoming even more treacherous and this resulted in the runners reserving their strength for the latter laps of the mile. Kirsty was eventually an easy overall winner. Jan Craig was next to finish revelling in the tough conditions to be the first Master Women 45. Sarah Goldsmith had a solid run and finished third overall and second in the Open Women. Jan Coffy finished fourth taking out the Master Women's 35 title.

BOYS AND GIRLS 10 AND UNDER 365m: The young ten and under boys and girls were the first to challenge the course racing over one lap of the 365m distance. The main bunch started the race like a 100m sprint and soon the field was left strung out with one contestant deciding he was going to run on the inside of the track for awhile. He was soon shown the error of his ways and directed back onto the course. In the end the long-striding Liam McCall held out a fast-finishing Daniel Cleminson to win the race. Reuben Knox and Natalie Pascoe were the next to finish.
