Although there were only a couple of minutes between Neale McLanachan and Andrew Lonie in the series in the lead up to the Three Peaks Mountain Race, McLanachan ran a well judged race to allay any doubts that he is the King of the Otago Mountain Series by putting in a great effort over the grueling Three Peaks 26 km Mountain Run to increase his final lead over Lonie by over 9 minutes. Peter Jenkins had a good run to deny James Montgomery third position in the series.
Sarah Chisnall decided that breaking Shireen Crumpton's women's record (set in 1999) by 19 seconds was the way to ensure that there were not any serious challengers to her title of Queen of the Otago Mountain Series. Cindy Lowe (2nd) and Sarah Goldsmith (3rd) were also in contention for this title as anything can happen in a race of this nature.
Experienced master's runner, Richard Hendry took out the Men's 35 King of the Mountain Series title, but he had to put in a good performance to ensure that the chasing bunch of Julian O'Hagan and Allan Williment did not steal his thunder. Julian O'Hagan finished only two minutes adrift of Richard Hendry in the Three Peaks, with Allan Williment only about five minutes behind. O'Hagan, a steadily improving runner from Leith Harriers, finished a creditable second in the series after some consistent performances in the first two races. Williment likewise was also very consistent.
Malcolm Hammond had to pull out all the stops in a race where he was not at his best in winning the Masters Men 50 King of the Mountain Running Series. Dave McLean, never one to give up on anything, thought he had a chance in toppling Hammond, however, Hammond drew on all his resources to not let McLean get too far away in the Three Peaks Race, by finishing only about two minutes adrift of McLean. McLean did well to finish second in the series, new over 50 runner Gerald Scoones finished third in the series with a good effort in the Three Peaks Race.
Consistently good running during the series and a particularly great effort in the Three Peaks, saw Sue Cuthbert win the Masters Women's 35 Queen of the Mountain title from Linda Murdoch (2nd) and Jan Craig (3rd).
