Junior and Senior Leith Training and Running evenings

Our next session will be on Tuesday 7 September 2010. Juniors only. See times below for various age groups - note: seniors/masters training sessions will start again in October.

Co-ordinator Marc Boulle (specialises in 800m training with elements of distance training for road and cross-country up to ultra distance)
Contact Ph 4667962 after 7pm or email marcb

Juniors: Tuesdays from 4.00pm to approximately 5.00pm. Meet inside the Caledonian Stadium opposite the start line (beneath the Control Room).

Format for 7th September 2010 - Either one or both of instructors Steve Skilling and Marc Boulle will be in attendance, after a warmup, the group will do formal training in the form of either a steady run, fartlek, aerobic interval sessions or technique drills or a combination of these. Note: These training sessions are athletics (running) specific and the emphasis is on the sport of athletics, in particular running.

Report summary for training session - Tues 24 August 2010
"This was the first session where the requirement for the juniors was to be of a certain fitness and age level with the ability to run steadily for at least 20 minutes without getting into stress. Although there were a couple of children who were not of the required fitness levels, we will monitor them over the next two sessions to see whether their fitness levels improve sufficiently to allow them to participate fully in the sessions. The rest of the squad are improving steadily and this was noticed in the 25 minute fartlek session done around the Logan Park area, mainly on the sports fields. Well done to those who are also taking part in other activities such as swimming, walking, easy running or sports such as gymnastics, netball, tennis during the week and thus increasing their abilities to take part fully in these Tuesday sessions. Note: you cannot become fit by just doing these Tuesday sessions - these sessions are primarily to teach people how to maximise their running potential with the secondary benefit being 45 minutes of constant activity giving an aerobic and endurance training effect."

Leith Children's Athletics start again in October and will be offering athletics training (track and field) on Monday evenings at the club's Chingford Park, North East Valley clubrooms from about 5.30pm, exact time to be announced closer to October.
Our sessions on Tuesdays (4pm to 5pm) will now be for more serious junior or older athletes who can run steadily for at least 20 minutes, this is due to the situation where we may only have one instructor in attendance, as the training for younger or less accomplished runners varies from that of more accomplished or older runners"

General Information on training format:
Note: these sessions will be easy paced, with the emphasis being on relaxed running, keeping form, technique and learning how to train for specific distances and over varied terrain.

Mostly done on the Caledonian Track and the surrounding bush tracks, includes fartlek (speedplay) sessions and/or easy running through the bush tracks and around Logan Park. There will also be game simulation adhancing running skills for the younger juniors. All training will conform to the five principles of training: specificity, overload, recovery, adaptation and reversibility. These principles will be constantly explained and emphasized. Also technique running - eg. how to start in an 800m, running in lanes (first 100m) and what to do from there. Running on bends, how and when to pass, track etiquette and more. How to run efficiently up or down hills and step training. Understanding interval and repetition training. Tips on how to fit in a running schedule with your work, school and other sports interests and how to use them to your advantage.

Some of the Runners/Coaches/Sports Instructors involved with these sessions include Marc Boulle (Leith) and Steve Skilling (Leith)
